When Battery Steele almost became a public city park

From the PILP archives: In the Portland Evening Express (Tuesday, March 8, 1955), it was reported that "Peaks Island Seaside Plot Seen as Ideal Park". 175 acres on the back shore was once owned by the federal government for use during World War II; this included Battery Steele. Seen as underdeveloped land, the city of Portland looked into purchasing it from the federal goverment to be developed as a public park. Camping, picnic areas, hiking, swimming and fishing were all part of the plan. In 1995, after decades of non-use, PILP was formed in order to purchase Battery Steele and forever preserve it as a public and protected space. The rest is history!
